they can run 64 bit code, bitch you only need two cores
2 Name: Anonymous 2024-05-06 04:16
Are you running that currently?

yeah. intel t7600 sucks shit at compiling c code from the aur but it can do everything else pretty well

i used to have a thinkpad x200 with an core 2 duo processor and it was fine, but i wouldn't recommend it anyone. maybe i'm biased, but sometimes it's just neat to have a slightly more modern processor. one thing for example is, that im addicted to youtube and i want the website to work properly, which is just not possible with a core 2 duo. it will overheat all the time, when playing normal videos in the background. you can argue all you want, if its necessary for anyone to use youtube or similar bloated websites, but you have to admit, that sometimes it's neat to have the ability to run that when needed. also, video playback in mpv and compiling source code, are both things i personally had problems with too on that machine. it works, but it does so barely. my argument is simply, that the ability to do all those things is good to have. processors that fulfill those requirements, to do the things listed above smoothly, don't need to be the newest and priciest chip released. ivy-bridge and sandy-bridge intel processors do the trick just fine.

I strongly agree. The software industry are masters at undoing all the hard work of the hardware industry. Just use better software. You can go look at old videos of older laptops and computers booting in seconds or opening programs instantly, despite modern computers being orders of magnitude more powerful, the software is so bloated that it counteracts it. tl;dr just use better software.

All the good video games are old anyway. You'll be able to play quake and half life and emulate n64 and ps1 games no problem.
>>5
my x200 can play youtube videos in hd no problem, you shouldn't be having this issue. Try replacing your thermal paste.

The Core 2 duo is what the establishment fears. My librebooted X60 (please, for the love of god libreboot your x60) can run all the early 2000s anime I could ever want to watch. It can run denpa-chan. It can run (eew) 4chan. It can run every person's website on the denpa-webring. The Core 2 thinkpads Duo can do everything your bitch-tier white-boy desktop can do, when necessary, but better and for free (as in freedom.)

>>8 please dont fall for the gnu meme libreboot and libre distros (i watched your gayass video) is just giving you insecure broken old software the are lacking in features and compatibility with modern standers please switch to coreboot and actual normal distros

you are a fucking faggot dude

I used nothing but core 2 duos at home: iMac at the desk and Dell it outside.

as you can see, new intel chips are literally 50% failure rate silicon dice roll. meanwhile the core 2 due Just Works.
14 Name: Anonymous 2024-08-04 13:15
intel's newest chips are shipping with fatal defects because they are blasting them with power in order to show generational improvements. This industry shot itself in the foot by promising infinite improvements gen over gen even when they run up against the limitations of physics. They colluded with the software industry to make newer chips pseudo-mandatory, and the press to make newer chips fashionable. Now they're firing 15% of their engineering staff (the people who actually know how to fix this mess) while the execs who put the company in this situation in the first place are sitting pretty. Disgusting practices from intel.

intel may be shitting the bed right now but nigga, you only need a core 2 duo.
16 Name: Anonymous 2024-09-04 12:25
B-but how am I supposed to watch YouTube comfortably with all that javascript that requires a quad core cpu?!
just use invidious nigga

32 bit was fine, it was faster.
programs written in assembly faster.

libc, compilers is a bloatware

If developers spent time working with older systems, modern software would be blazing fast on modern hardware. Unfortunately, everything is designed to just barely not be taxing on a fairly fast and recent machine, so it runs like shit on older hardware.
Often, it's not even that hard to speed things up, spending any time at all on making the program less inefficient (or even less dependent on an action happening immediately instead of it taking time to execute) would help.

these retard devs will say some shit like "just buy a new pc lol poorfag". You know there's like 50 million tonnes of ewaste in the world and every time you make some bloated bullshit you are contributing to it. I think compsci courses should be mandated to include some section on environmental science because these people don't realise or don't care that it's not just annoying when programs don't work on old hardware, it's actively an environmental disaster.

I just noticed that the old desktop I have next to my main one is literally a C2D machine. I really need to get a KVM or maybe find a cheap office monitor so I can use it conveniently.

>>20
the thing that pisses me off is that there's a bunch of free (and capital F Free) software that runs like pure shit
it's easy to understand a shitty company trying to sell you the latest thing, like what MS, Google, and Apple all do since they all directly profit from hardware sales... but most software developers and companies don't have that kind of incentive

a lot of it really is just incompetence

>>19
the most disgusting thing is easily just how many devices are e-waste almost immediately due to their effective performance
they're fast devices in an objective sense, way faster than anything I'd have used in like 2005 or so
but the effective performance is MUCH worse due to the shit software, just stuttering garbage out the gate, programs open slowly, not much space onboard and no good way to expand it (again, there's a lot of space in an objective sense - I ran Windows XP on a 10GB disk, and the device might have 32GB... but 16 of that is used out of the box, and programs take up hundreds of megabytes instead of only dozens now), it all just sucks ass

hijacking this tread for the current nonsense with hardware price spike pondering.

don't sell anything. in the near future it may be impossible to get consumer hardware at any price. they want a future of thin clients and datacenter cloud computing. making it impossible to have competent hardware at home. there is no one who will save you from this. it's impossible for a start up to rise to meet the consumer space demand. brain drain, 50 years of incremental boot strapping.
the child of tomorrow will dream of having a core II duo at home to run anything locally.

This is kinda true, since after ram, whats next?

Incredible insight. Such pertinence in relation to the thread. Thanks. You could've at least schizoposted something out, but no- on with the chat GPT "essaying".

I like the core 2 duo. Personally i would let the core 2 duo fuck my bitch.
If the core 2 duo was a person they would be 6ft6in.
The core 2 duo can thug it out with 5 maybe 7 firefox tabs.
If you dont fuck with the core 2 duo then you my op.
Also it can run 64 bit programs.

I really should make my C2D machine useful. It is sitting here, turned off. It is mildly haunted and the DVD drive ejects itself at random on boot and I think it has powered up on its own at least once.

It's a shitty old Dell piece of garbage that I probably should take to the recycler, but it boots and runs fine once it's turned on.
